Live betting sites in South Africa: in-play markets at licensed bookmakers
Which provincially licensed bookmakers publish live, in-play markets, how live odds behave and the checks worth making before a mid-match bet.

Live betting means placing a bet after an event has started, at odds that shift with every goal, wicket or try. All the bookmakers in the table below are licensed by a provincial gambling board and say in their own published pages that they take in-play bets; the order follows our scorecard, which weighs licence, player protection, bonus terms, payments, offer and transparency.

What a live sportsbook offers that pre-match betting does not
A pre-match bet is struck at a price fixed before kick-off. A live sportsbook keeps re-pricing the match while it is played. Three things change once the whistle goes:
- Prices move constantly. A goal, a red card or a rain delay changes the odds within seconds, and the bookmaker may briefly suspend a market while it re-prices.
- New markets open. Next goal, next team to score, total corners from now, the winner of the current set or over in cricket: many in-play markets only make sense once the event is running.
- Cash out becomes useful. Where offered, cash out lets you settle a bet early for an amount the bookmaker quotes at that moment, which may be more or less than your stake.
The trade-off is speed. Decisions that would take a minute before a match have to be made in seconds, which is exactly why live betting needs firmer limits than pre-match betting.
How licensed bookmakers describe their live betting
The operators' own pages give a sense of how each one presents in-play betting:
- Sportingbet: a live betting area with over 300 markets per game, plus bet builder and multi boosts.
- Scorebet: bets before kick-off or live in-play, with cash out "when it suits you".
- Bet.co.za: a running count of in-play events on the home page, bet builder and cash out.
- Gbets: live betting with bet builder, cash out and multi-bet boosts.
- PlayBet: prematch and live in-play betting, with a same match bet builder.
- Supabets: in-play markets with odds shifts shown as they happen.
- World Sports Betting: live in-play betting and odds boosters across soccer, cricket and rugby.
The other bookmakers in the ranking (Betshezi, SunBet, Betfred, Topbet, YesPlay, Interbet and Lulabet) also list live or in-play sections; their scorecards set out what else they offer. Markets per match, streaming and cash-out availability vary by sport and by event, so check the live menu on the day.
Live betting on soccer, rugby, cricket and racing
Soccer usually carries the deepest in-play menus, from the Betway Premiership to the big European leagues. Rugby and cricket suit live betting well because the state of the game is easy to read: a yellow card or a collapse of wickets is visible to everyone at once. Tennis and basketball move fastest of all.
Horse racing works differently. A race is over in minutes, so "live" usually means betting up to the off and following the race on a stream. World Sports Betting's published pages mention race streaming and early prices for local and international tracks. Searches for a Greyville live race tend to peak around the Hollywoodbets Durban July, which is run at Hollywoodbets Greyville in Durban.
Reading live score odds without getting rushed
Live score odds are a moving price, so a few habits help:
- Watch the event, not just the numbers. Score feeds can lag behind television pictures by several seconds, and the bookmaker's price may already reflect something you have not seen yet.
- Expect rejected or changed bets. If the odds change between tapping and confirming, the bookmaker may decline the bet or offer a new price. Read the confirmation screen before accepting.
- Know the cash-out rule. A cash-out quote includes the bookmaker's margin, so settling early is usually worth less than the bet's fair value.
- Set a stake ceiling in advance. Live markets keep producing new prices, and that is when bet sizes creep up.
Most live betting happens on a phone. Our page on betting apps in South Africa covers how each bookmaker's mobile offer is set up, and the main betting sites ranking compares the same operators on everything else.
Live draws are not live betting: UK49s and Powerball
Many "live" searches in South Africa are about lottery draws rather than sport: the UK49s live draw, Powerball live tonight or Gosloto live results. Watching a draw live is not a bet, and betting on the outcome of a lottery is restricted by section 57 of the Lotteries Act, so this ranking does not cover it. For results, see UK49s results and Powerball results, which are published once the official numbers are out.
Live dealer tables and BetGames
Some bookmakers also list live dealer games such as live roulette and live blackjack, or BetGames-style draws streamed from a studio. These are casino-style games, and their legal status at bookmakers is disputed and depends on the province; they are covered separately under live games and BetGames, not in this sports ranking.
Keeping in-play betting under control
Live betting compresses the time between bets, so the controls your bookmaker offers matter more here than anywhere else. Deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion are available at licensed SA bookmakers, and a bet that feels urgent is usually one to skip. Betting is for adults only: you must be 18 or older. The responsible gambling guide explains how to set limits and where to get confidential support.
Questions and answers
What is live betting?
Live betting, also called in-play betting, is betting on an event after it has started. Odds update as the match unfolds, and markets such as next goal or the winner of the current set open up.
Is live betting legal in South Africa?
Yes, live sports betting is legal online when you use a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board, such as those in the ranking above. Offshore sites are not licensed in South Africa.
Why was my live bet rejected?
In-play odds change quickly. If the price moves or the market is suspended between your tap and the bookmaker's confirmation, the bet can be declined or offered at a new price.
Is cash out the same at every bookmaker?
No. Cash out is not offered on every market, and the amount offered is set by the bookmaker at that moment. Check each operator's terms for how it works.
Can I bet on the UK49s live draw here?
No. This page covers sports betting only. Betting on lottery outcomes is restricted by the Lotteries Act; the UK49s and Powerball pages publish results only.
