Best Betting Apps in South Africa: Licensed Bookmakers on Your Phone
Sports betting apps from provincially licensed SA bookmakers, how the Android APK and iPhone routes differ, and what to check before you install.

A good betting app in South Africa comes from a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board, is downloaded from the bookmaker's own site or an official app store, and gives you the same FICA checks, limits and self-exclusion tools as the full website. The ranking below lists licensed bookmakers whose own pages describe a mobile app, ordered by our score out of 5. Everything else on this page explains how to tell a proper sports betting app from a risky download.

The list is short on purpose. Plenty of South African bookmakers run a mobile website that works well in a phone browser, but only some describe a dedicated app on their own pages. If a brand you use is missing here, it may still have one; check its review on our bookmaker reviews page, where we note what each operator publishes.
How we chose the best betting apps in South Africa
We do not install apps and judge them by feel. The order comes from the same scorecard we use for every bookmaker: licence, player protection, bonus terms, payments, the betting offer and transparency. For this page we only included operators whose published pages confirm a mobile app, either as an Android download or on Apple's App Store.
- Licence first. Each operator listed holds a bookmaker licence from a provincial board, such as the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board or the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. An app adds nothing if the company behind it is not licensed.
- Where the app comes from. The download has to come from the operator's own domain or an official store, never from a third-party file site.
- What the app covers. Pre-match and live betting, cash out where offered, and the same account tools as the desktop site.
Android APK or App Store: what the operators say
Most South African sports betting apps for Android are not in Google Play. They are installed as an APK file straight from the bookmaker's website, and your phone will ask once for permission to install apps from that source. PlayBet's app page says this directly: the app is downloaded from PlayBet itself, and its listing notes Android 6.0 or newer. Scorebet also offers an Android APK download from its own app page, and YesPlay links an APK file from its mobile page.
iPhone users usually have a simpler route. YesPlay points iOS users to the Apple App Store, and Sportingbet says its slots library and betting markets are available through a mobile app compatible with both Android and iOS devices. Supabets shows a download link on its homepage; the details of which phones it supports are on the operator's own page.
Full download steps for each brand are on its own app page, for example the Scorebet app guide.
Downloading a sports betting app safely
An APK is a program that runs on your phone with the permissions you give it, so the source matters more than the logo. A few habits keep the download clean:
- Type the bookmaker's address yourself or use the link from its licensed site, not a link from a social media post, a WhatsApp forward or a "mod" site.
- Check the footer of the site you download from. A licensed South African bookmaker names its provincial board, its licence number and its operating company there.
- Allow installs from that one source only, and switch the setting off again once the app is installed.
- Keep the app updated from the same place. Old APKs do not update themselves through Google Play.
- Log in with the same account you use on the website. There is no separate sign-up for the app, and FICA verification carries over.
Pages that promise a "modded" app, a hidden link or a way around FICA are a warning sign, not a shortcut.
Football and soccer betting apps: what to expect on the pitch side
For most South African bettors the app is a football betting app first. The operators in this ranking cover local and European football, with live in-play markets that update during the match. Sportingbet advertises more than 300 live markets per game; Scorebet lets you bet before kick-off or in play and cash out when it suits you; PlayBet has a same-match bet builder. Rugby, cricket and tennis sit alongside, and several of these apps also carry horse racing.
On a small screen the bet slip is where mistakes happen. Before you confirm, check the selection, the odds and the stake on the slip; our bet slip guide walks through what each line means.
Free betting apps and what "free" really means
Every licensed sports betting app is free to download, but betting with it is not. Welcome offers that appear in the app are the same offers as on the website and come with turnover rules, minimum odds and expiry dates. Read the terms in the app before you deposit, and treat any bonus as a promotion with conditions rather than extra money.
Using the app with limits switched on
A phone makes betting easy at any hour, which is exactly why the protection tools matter more on an app than on a laptop. The licensed operators listed here describe deposit limits, time-outs or self-exclusion on their responsible gambling pages; set them in your account and they apply on every device. Betting is for adults only: you must be 18 or older, and the bookmaker will verify your age through FICA. If betting stops being fun, our responsible gambling page lists the free National Responsible Gambling Programme line and how self-exclusion works.
Questions and answers
Which betting app is best in South Africa?
There is no single best app for everyone. Start with bookmakers licensed by a provincial gambling board, then compare the betting offer, payment methods and protection tools. The ranking on this page orders licensed operators that publish a mobile app by their overall score.
Why is the betting app not in Google Play?
Many South African bookmakers distribute their Android app as an APK file from their own website instead of Google Play. Download it only from the operator's licensed domain and allow installs from that source only.
Is there a sports betting app for iPhone?
Some licensed bookmakers list an iOS app on the Apple App Store, for example YesPlay, and Sportingbet says its app works on both Android and iOS. Others rely on a mobile website that runs in Safari.
Do I need a new account to use the app?
No. The app uses the same account, balance and FICA status as the bookmaker's website. You sign in with your existing details.
Are sports betting apps legal in South Africa?
Betting on sport and horse racing is legal with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial board, and the app is simply another way to reach that licensed account. Apps from offshore sites without a South African licence are not legal options.
