Betting Odds in South Africa: How to Read and Compare Them
Decimal betting odds explained with worked examples, plus how to compare soccer, outright and transfer prices across licensed South African bookmakers.
Betting odds tell you two things at once: how much a winning bet returns and how likely the bookmaker thinks the outcome is. South African bookmakers quote decimal odds, so a R100 bet at 2.50 returns R250 if it wins, your R100 stake plus R150 profit. To get better value, compare the same market at several licensed bookmakers before you place the bet, because prices for one match can differ from site to site.

Decimal betting odds in plain numbers
Every decimal price converts into an implied probability: divide 1 by the odds. Odds of 2.00 imply 50%, 4.00 imply 25%, and 1.25 imply 80%. The table shows what a R50 stake returns at common prices.

For multiples, the odds of each leg are multiplied together. A three-leg multi at 1.50, 1.80 and 2.00 pays 5.40 times the stake, but all three legs must win. Our odds calculator works out returns for singles and multis, and converts fractional prices into decimal.
Why the same match has different soccer odds
Add up the implied chances of all outcomes in a market and you will get more than 100%. The surplus is the bookmaker's margin. A home-draw-away market priced at 2.10, 3.30 and 3.60 adds up to about 106%, so the margin is roughly 6%. Lower margins mean better prices for bettors over time.
Margins vary by bookmaker and by market. Big matches in the Betway Premiership or the English Premier League usually carry tighter margins than lower leagues, while player specials and same-match bet builder combinations tend to carry wider ones. Comparing two or three sites for the same selection is the simplest way to find the higher price.
Outright markets: PL winner, World Cup and transfers
Outright odds are prices on the end result of a competition rather than one match.
- PL winner odds are priced for the whole Premier League season and move after every round, injury or managerial change.
- World Cup odds for the next tournament open long before kick-off. Football World Cup champion prices are quoted per team, and prices on long shots carry the widest margins.
- Transfer odds price whether a named player will join a named club by a deadline. These markets are thin, can be suspended without notice and are not offered by every bookmaker.
Money staked on outrights is tied up until the market settles, sometimes for months. Check each bookmaker's rules on how a market is settled before betting.
Odds on F1, golf and horse racing
Formula 1 odds cover race winners, podium finishes and season championships. Golf odds, including the Masters, are usually each-way markets with large fields, so even the favourite can be priced well above 5.00. Horse racing odds work a little differently: local racing, including meetings at the Vaal, is offered both at fixed odds and through tote pools, where the dividend depends on the total pool. There are no sure odds
Searches for "2 sure odds" or "5 sure odds today" promise something that does not exist. Low odds such as 1.20 still lose about one time in six, and a bookmaker's price already includes its margin. Tipsters selling sure odds or fixed matches are not a source of information; they are a warning sign. Getting the best football odds today
- Pick the market first, for example the match result in a PSL fixture.
- Open the same match at two or three licensed bookmakers from the table.
- Compare the price on your selection and the margin across the whole market.
- Check the minimum odds of any bonus you are using; many promotions only count bets at or above a set price.
- Keep stakes within the budget you set before you started.

How do I calculate winnings from decimal odds?
Multiply your stake by the odds. R100 at 1.80 returns R180, which is R80 profit plus your R100 stake.
Which bookmaker has the best soccer odds?
It changes match by match. Margins differ between bookmakers and between markets, so compare the same selection at two or three licensed sites before betting.
What does a bookmaker margin mean?
It is the amount by which the implied chances of all outcomes exceed 100%. A market adding up to 105% has a margin of about 5%.
Are there safe or sure odds?
No. Even a price of 1.20 implies roughly one loss in six. Anyone selling sure odds or fixed matches should be avoided.
Can I bet on transfer odds in South Africa?
Some licensed bookmakers offer transfer markets on major players. They are not offered everywhere and can be suspended quickly, so read the settlement rules first.
