Betfred South Africa is a licensed bookmaker: its site names Betting World (Pty) Ltd, trading as Betfred South Africa, and a bookmaker licence from the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. In this Betfred review we look at what the operator publishes about its sports betting, horse racing, lucky numbers and games, its welcome offer, payments and player protection. The short version: the licence and company details are clear and the betting offer is wide, but payment methods and full bonus terms are not easy to find on its public pages.

Betfred review: licence and who runs it

The licence notice on betfred.co.za reads that the company is licensed and regulated by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator under bookmaker licence number 9-2-1-00039. The registered company is Betting World (Pty) Ltd, registration number 2000/008649/07, with an address on Rivonia Road in Sandton. Separately, the National Gambling Board's register of verified operators, as published on 1 November 2026, lists Betfred SA Gauteng (Pty) Ltd as a bookmaker licensed in Gauteng.

That gives Betfred SA a presence under two provincial regulators. For a reader, the practical point is simple: the footer of the site you bet on should show the board and number, and they should match a public register. Betfred's do.

The Betting World name may ring a bell. Betting World is also a separate bookmaker brand in South Africa, and our Betting World review covers it. If you searched for "Betfred Betting World", the shared company name is the reason.

Sports betting at Betfred SA

Betfred's home page lists football, rugby, cricket and basketball alongside live in-play betting, and its menus show competitions such as the UEFA Champions League. That covers what most South African punters bet on, from PSL soccer to Springbok tests, though the depth of markets on each match is something to judge on the site itself.

Odds change constantly and no bookmaker is best on every market. Before placing a sizeable bet, compare Betfred's odds for the same selection with one or two other licensed bookmakers. Our best betting odds page explains how to compare margins.

Book a bet and bet slips

Many South African bookmakers let you build a bet slip online and take a booking code to a branch or share it. Whether Betfred offers this, and how it works, is set out in its own help pages, so check there rather than relying on third-party descriptions. Our guide on reading a bet slip explains what to check before you confirm any bet.

Horse racing

Horse racing appears in Betfred's main menu, alongside the sports. Racing in South Africa is a tote and fixed-odds market with its own rules on dead heats, non-runners and starting prices. Read the racing section of the terms before you bet on a race for the first time, especially if you are used to soccer markets.

Lucky numbers products

Betfred promotes several lucky numbers style products on its home page, including Fred's Hourly Powerball and Nifty Numbers. These are fixed-odds bets on the outcome of a number draw, not National Lottery tickets. Betting on the outcome of a lottery is restricted by section 57 of the Lotteries Act, and whether bookmaker lucky numbers bets are covered by provincial approvals is a contested question. We publish lottery results for information only, without recommending where to bet on them.

Slots, Aviator and other games

Betfred's site shows a games section with slots, live games, crash games and instant games. Titles named on its home page include Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, Sugar Rush and Aviator. Slot-style games at bookmakers are legally contested: the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in October 2025 that Gauteng bookmakers may not offer bets on casino games, the National Gambling Board reads that judgment as applying nationally, and the Western Cape board disagrees for its own licensees. The position for Mpumalanga licensees is not settled. Our Betfred games page lists what is shown in its lobby.

Betfred welcome bonus

New customers are offered Up to R21,000 plus 750 free spins for new customers, according to the headline on Betfred's home page. The headline combines a deposit-based amount with free spins. What the home page does not show is how the offer is split across deposits, the rollover, minimum odds or expiry. Those rules decide how much of the offer is realistic to use, so read the full promotion terms before you opt in. The Betfred promo code page explains whether a code is needed.

Payments and Betfred withdrawals

This is the weakest part of Betfred's public information. Its home page and help pages do not list the deposit and withdrawal methods available to South African customers, and no standard withdrawal time is stated. If you want to deposit with a specific method such as 1Voucher, EFT or Ozow, confirm with support before you register.

Whatever the method, a withdrawal at any licensed bookmaker is only paid once your account is FICA-verified, normally to a bank account in your own name. Our payments guide compares bookmakers that publish their methods clearly.

Opening a Betfred account and FICA

Betfred's terms say a customer is eligible to bet once that person has been verified for FICA purposes. In practice, that means uploading an ID document, proof of address and possibly proof of bank account straight after you sign up. The step-by-step version is on our Betfred registration page.

Betfred mobile betting

Betfred's site works in a mobile browser, and any app should be downloaded only through a link on betfred.co.za. Your account, balance and limits are the same on every device. See the Betfred app page for the safe way to install it.

Responsible gambling and support

Betfred's footer carries the National Responsible Gambling Programme toll-free counselling line, 0800 006 008, and states that no persons under the age of 18 may gamble. Its site refers to responsible gambling tools and self-exclusion. For help with your account, Betfred lists the email address [email protected] and a phone line, 087 095 8862.

Gambling is for adults 18 and over only. Set a deposit limit before your first bet, and see our responsible gambling page for free counselling and national self-exclusion.

Is Betfred legit in South Africa?

On the evidence of its published documents, yes: Betfred South Africa names a registered company, shows a Mpumalanga Economic Regulator licence number in its footer and appears on the National Gambling Board register. Being licensed is not the same as being the right choice for you, though. If clear payment information or detailed bonus terms matter to you, compare it with others in our betting sites ranking. The score next to this review is calculated from licence, protection, bonus terms, payments, offer and transparency, as explained on our rating method page.
