Sports betting in South Africa is legal online when you bet with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board, such as the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board or the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. This guide helps you find those bookmakers, read their terms without the sales talk, and understand where the legal line sits for games, lotteries and offshore sites. Every score and verdict here is built from published documents: terms and conditions, bonus rules, help pages and licence notices.
Licensed sports betting sites, ranked by score
The bookmakers below all hold a provincial licence and offer sports betting. Their order follows a score out of 5 that weighs licence, player protection, bonus terms, payments, the betting offer and transparency. The full method is on how we rate betting sites.

What is legal: online betting in South Africa in 2026
The rules are clearer than the advertising suggests:
- Sports and horse racing betting with a provincially licensed bookmaker is legal online. The Advertising Regulatory Board's gambling code, prepared with the National Gambling Board, states plainly that online betting on sports events is legal.
- Casino-style gambling online is not licensed in South Africa. The National Gambling Act 2004 prohibits interactive games without a licence under the Act, and no such licences have ever been issued.
- Slots and crash games at bookmakers are disputed. In October 2025 the Supreme Court of Appeal barred Gauteng bookmakers from taking bets on casino games. The National Gambling Board reads that as national; the Western Cape board says it does not affect its licensees. National policy is still pending.
- Offshore sites are not licensed here and are not covered on this site at all.
No bill passed in 2026 has changed this. The Remote Gambling Bill lapsed in 2024, and the National Gambling Amendment Bill would create a national regulator but does not legalise casino games online.
How to check a bookmaker's licence
A licensed South African bookmaker shows a licence notice in its footer. A typical notice names the provincial board, gives a licence number, names the operating company with its registration number, and carries the National Responsible Gambling Programme line, an 18+ statement and the slogan "Winners know when to stop". You can then compare the company and licence number against the National Gambling Board's Verified Operators list, which names the licence holder, type, licence number and province. If a betting site shows no South African board at all, treat it as unlicensed.
Sports, markets and live betting
Football dominates online sports betting here. The top league is the Betway Premiership, whose 2026/27 season launched on 30 July 2026 with 16 clubs in the PSL's 30th anniversary year. Most licensed bookmakers also cover the English Premier League, the Champions League, rugby, cricket and tennis, and many offer in-play markets, bet builders and cash out. Horse racing has deep roots too: the Hollywoodbets Durban July at Greyville carries a R10m stake, and several bookmakers stream local meetings.
New to it? Our betting guides explain bet slips, odds formats and the maths behind multis, and the odds calculator shows what a price really implies.
Bonuses, payments and the fine print
Welcome offers at licensed bookmakers range from small sign-up credits to deposit matches spread over several deposits. The headline number matters less than the rules behind it: rollover, minimum odds, which games count and how long you have. Our bonus pages quote those rules from each operator's terms rather than repeating the banner.
Payments are a local strength. Instant EFT through Ozow, card deposits, bank EFT, Capitec Pay and retail vouchers such as 1Voucher, OTT and Blu are all named by licensed bookmakers. Before you can withdraw, any licensed operator must verify your identity under FICA: expect to provide ID, proof of address and proof of your bank account.
Games, Aviator and slots at bookmakers
Many licensed bookmakers also list slots, crash games such as Aviator and live game shows. We cover these as information pages: how each game works, its provider, RTP and features from the provider's own game sheet, and which licensed bookmakers list it. Start with our slot reviews. Because the legal status of casino-style games at bookmakers depends on the province and is under national review, those pages carry no buttons and no rankings.
Lotto, Powerball and lucky numbers
Results for the National Lottery games appear in our lotto results section, refreshed from public results pages. Since 1 June 2026 the National Lottery has been run by Sizekhaya Holdings, which replaced Ithuba; its licence is under court challenge. Separately, many bookmakers offer fixed-odds bets on draws such as UK49s. Betting on lottery outcomes is restricted by section 57 of the Lotteries Act, so our lucky numbers pages publish results and explain the draws only.
Betting that stays affordable
Gambling is for adults only: no persons under the age of 18 years are permitted to gamble. Set a deposit limit before your first bet, never chase losses and treat any stake as money spent. The National Responsible Gambling Programme runs a confidential counselling line, and our responsible gambling page explains self-exclusion and the tools licensed bookmakers provide.
Questions and answers
Is online sports betting legal in South Africa?
Yes, when you bet with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board. Casino-style gambling online is not licensed in South Africa.
How do I know if a betting site is licensed?
Look for the provincial board and licence number in the site's footer, then check the operator against the National Gambling Board's Verified Operators list.
What do I need to open a betting account?
You must be 18 or older, and licensed bookmakers verify your identity under FICA, typically with an ID document, proof of address and proof of your bank account.
Why do some pages on this site have no buttons?
Game and lucky numbers pages are informational because the legal status of casino-style games at bookmakers and bets on lottery outcomes is disputed. Only licensed bookmakers get buttons, and only on betting pages.
Who runs the National Lottery now?
Sizekhaya Holdings has been the National Lottery operator since 1 June 2026, replacing Ithuba. Its licence is subject to a court challenge.
