This TAB review covers the TAB Gold website, tabgold.co.za, run by Race Coast KZN (previously trading as Gold Circle (Pty) Ltd) under licence TOT0002 from the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority, issued 31 March 2025. TAB is a tote, not a conventional bookmaker: you bet into a shared pool on horse racing and on soccer pools such as Soccer6, rather than at fixed odds. It is legit and licensed, it has some of the clearest self-exclusion rules seen on any South African betting site, and it is narrower than the big bookmakers: no slots, crash games or lucky numbers appear in its offer.

Is TAB legit? Licence and operator

The TAB Gold footer gives three key facts:

  • Operator: Race Coast KZN, previously trading as Gold Circle (Pty) Ltd, company registration 1998/024366/07.
  • Licence: operator licence TOT0002, issued 31 March 2025, from the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority. The "TOT" prefix reflects a totalisator licence rather than a bookmaker licence.
  • Age: no persons under the age of 18 are permitted to gamble.

A totalisator is regulated in the same provincial system as bookmakers. If you want to check any operator yourself, the method is on the licensed betting sites page.

How TAB betting works: the tote explained

At a fixed-odds bookmaker, the price is agreed when you place the bet. At the tote, all stakes on a race or pool go into one pot. The operator takes its deduction, and what is left is shared among the winning tickets. Your return depends on how many other punters backed the same result.

  • Win and place pools: the dividend is known only once betting closes and the result is official.
  • TAB odds on screen are approximate dividends based on the money in the pool so far; they move until the off.
  • Exotic pools such as the Quartet (the first four horses in order) can pay large dividends because few tickets win.

TAB offers South African Quartet pools with fractional betting, including on UK meetings such as Southwell and Newmarket. Fractional betting lets you take a percentage of a combination, which keeps the cost of a big permutation down at the price of a smaller share of the dividend.

TAB horse racing

Horse racing is the heart of TAB. The site carries tote betting on local South African race meetings and international ones, with UK meetings named on the home page. If you mostly bet on racing and want pool dividends rather than bookmaker prices, TAB is the natural home. If you want fixed odds, early prices or best-odds guarantees, compare with the racing sections of fixed-odds bookmakers in the betting sites ranking.

TAB sports betting: soccer pools

TAB's sport offer is pool betting on soccer rather than a full fixed-odds sportsbook. The home page lists Soccer6, Soccer10 and Soccer Any 13Xtra. In a soccer pool you predict results across a set of matches, and the pool is shared among the correct tickets; when nobody wins, a carryover adds to the next pool. The rules for each pool, including how postponed matches are handled, are on the TAB site.

If you are looking for TAB live betting or TAB live odds on single football matches, those are fixed-odds products that the TAB Gold pages read do not offer. Bookmakers with in-play betting are compared on the live betting sites page.

The TAB Gold online site and digital betting

The online platform is the TAB Gold site. People searching for a "new TAB digital betting site" usually mean this platform. Type the address yourself, since copycat sites borrow familiar names. Whether TAB offers a downloadable app, and its current device support, is set out on the site itself.

Opening an account: TAB FICA requirements

Gold Circle's published FICA policy for its tote is one of the most detailed in the market. It asks for:

  • full names, SA ID or passport number, email, mobile number and source of funds;
  • an ID book, Smart ID card (front and back) or valid driver's licence;
  • proof of address, such as a utility bill, bank statement or municipal account, no older than 3 months;
  • proof of bank account, a statement no older than 3 months.

The policy says no account will be created until the customer's identity is conclusively verified. That makes sign-up slower than at some bookmakers, but you will not hit a FICA wall at your first withdrawal.

TAB deposits and withdrawals

The TAB pages read do not list deposit methods, a minimum deposit or withdrawal times, and nothing in them confirms 1Voucher or other voucher deposits. Check the banking section after you register. If voucher deposits matter, the voucher betting sites page lists bookmakers where 1Voucher, OTT or Blu are confirmed.

TAB bonuses and promotions

No welcome bonus terms were found. Tote operators traditionally run fewer sign-up offers than fixed-odds bookmakers. What is known is covered on the TAB promo code page, and offers from other licensed bookmakers are on the bonuses hub.

Slots and Aviator at TAB

Searches for TAB free spins or TAB Aviator come up, but neither slots nor crash games are part of the TAB Gold offer described in the pages read. TAB stays with racing and soccer pools, which also keeps it clear of the legal dispute over casino-style games at bookmakers.

Responsible gambling at TAB

TAB's responsible gambling page sets out three levels of exclusion:

  1. Temporary suspension: your account is put on hold for a minimum of 7 days.
  2. Self-exclusion: a longer, formal break.
  3. Permanent exclusion from the platform.

The page also gives limits advice, the National Gambling Board helpline details and the SARGF process for lifting an exclusion. Few operators explain these steps so plainly. More on the responsible gambling page.

Reading a TAB betting slip

A tote ticket looks different from a fixed-odds bet slip. Instead of odds and a potential return, it shows the pool, the race or soccer pool number, your selections or permutation, the unit stake and, for fractional bets, the percentage you have taken. The return is filled in only after the dividend is declared. When you check a winning ticket, compare the official dividend for your pool with the share your fraction entitles you to. The bet slip guide explains the fixed-odds version for comparison.

Customer support

TAB's FAQ lists telephone lines on +27 31 314 1869 and +27 31 314 1870, Durban numbers that match a KwaZulu-Natal operator, along with email support.

Who TAB suits

TAB suits punters who bet mainly on horse racing and like pool dividends, Quartets and soccer pools, and who value strong exclusion tools and a long-established local operator. It does not suit someone looking for fixed odds on single matches, a wide welcome bonus or a games lobby.
