Free spins at licensed South African bookmakers
Free spins from provincially licensed bookmakers: who offers them, how they are credited and which terms decide what they are worth.

Free spins are a set number of slot rounds that a bookmaker credits to your account, either when you register or when you make a qualifying deposit, so you can play a named slot without staking your own balance. In South Africa they come from provincially licensed bookmakers that also run slot lobbies, not from online casinos, which hold no South African licence. Winnings from free spins are usually paid as bonus money with turnover rules, a time limit and sometimes a cap, so the number of spins says little on its own.
Free spins are only for adults aged 18 and over, and they are a bonus, not a source of income.
Licensed bookmakers with free spins offers
The bookmakers below publish a spins element in their welcome offer. The bonus column shows the offer as written in each operator's terms; offers change often, so the operator's own promotions page is the final word.

- Scorebet pairs its first deposit match with spins on Gates of Olympus: First Deposit 100% Match (up to R5,000) plus Free Spins (up to 150, on Gates of Olympus).
- Gbets advertises a new-customer offer of 50 Free Spins and a R50 Free Bet for new customers.
- PlayBet states in its FAQ that new customers get spins credited automatically on registration, for selected Pragmatic Play slots: Fire Strike, 888 Dragons, Big Bass Bonanza 1000 and Extra Juicy. The same FAQ says the spins expire after 24 hours and winnings from them are capped. See the PlayBet review.
- Betfred lists a welcome package of Up to R21,000 plus 750 free spins for new customers.
- Betshezi includes bonus spins in its promotions; the terms set 5x turnover on bonus spins against 20x on the match bonuses, with a three-day window.
Free spins on registration versus deposit bonus spins
There are two common forms, and they behave differently.
| Type | How you get it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Free spins on registration | Credited after sign-up, sometimes only after FICA verification | Expiry in hours or days, the eligible slot, a cap on winnings |
| Free spins deposit bonus | Added with a match bonus after a qualifying first deposit | Minimum qualifying deposit, turnover on the bonus, which games count |
| Ongoing promotions | Reloads, tournaments or game-of-the-week offers | Opt-in rules and whether the bonus stacks with others |
Spins on registration with no deposit are rarer and smaller. Offers of "50 free spins no deposit no wager" or "25 free spins on registration no deposit" circulate widely, but they usually come from offshore sites. A licensed bookmaker may give a small sign-up credit, yet it will still attach turnover or expiry rules. Our page on the no deposit bonus explains those offers.
The terms that decide what free spins are worth
Before you accept any spins, read these parts of the bonus rules:
- Eligible games. Spins are almost always tied to one slot or a short list. You cannot move them to another game.
- Spin value. Each spin is set at a fixed stake, usually the lowest. A large number of low-value spins can be worth less than a few larger ones.
- Expiry. Unused spins disappear. Some offers give you a day, others a few days.
- Turnover. Winnings usually land as bonus funds that must be played through a set number of times before you can withdraw.
- Win cap. Many offers limit how much you can cash out from spin winnings, whatever the slot pays.
- Who qualifies. One offer per person, household or device is normal, and self-excluded players are not eligible.
A useful habit: work out what you would need to bet to clear the turnover, and ask whether you would have bet that much anyway.
Which slots carry spins
Bookmakers tend to attach spins to popular titles from big providers. Scorebet names Gates of Olympus, and PlayBet names Big Bass Bonanza 1000, a version of Big Bass Bonanza. Habanero and Pragmatic Play titles appear widely in licensed lobbies; our slot reviews give each game's provider, RTP and volatility.
Spina Zonke games with free spins are a frequent search too; Spina Zonke is a bookmaker brand name for a slots section, explained on our Spina Zonke page, and Betshezi uses the similar name Spina Shezi. Free games won inside a slot, through scatter symbols, are a game feature and are different from bonus spins credited by the bookmaker.
A word on the legal position
Slots at bookmakers are legally contested in South Africa. The Supreme Court of Appeal barred Gauteng bookmakers from bets on casino games in October 2025, the National Gambling Board reads that as applying nationally, and the Western Cape board says its licensees are not affected. A free spins offer can be withdrawn or limited if the rules change, and availability may depend on the province.
Free spins from casinos and social games
Search results mix three different things under the words casino free spins:
- Offshore casino sites. They advertise large spin bundles to South Africans, but online casinos are not licensed here, operating or promoting them is unlawful, and your money has no local protection. We do not list them.
- Social games. Spins in games like Coin Master are in-app items in a social game, with no cash value. They are not a gambling bonus.
- Licensed bookmakers. The offers above, run under a provincial licence, with published terms and an 18+ requirement.
Using free spins sensibly
Treat spins as a way to try a slot, not as money you are owed. Do not deposit more than planned only to unlock extra spins, and do not chase turnover before an expiry date. Set a deposit limit in your account before claiming. Questions and answers
Can I get free spins without a deposit at a licensed SA bookmaker?
Some bookmakers credit spins on registration, as PlayBet's FAQ describes. They usually expire quickly and have a cap on winnings. Most spins offers need a qualifying first deposit.
Are winnings from free spins paid in cash?
Usually not straight away. Winnings normally arrive as bonus funds that must meet turnover rules before withdrawal, and some offers cap the amount you can cash out.
Can I choose the slot for my free spins?
Rarely. The terms name the eligible slot or a short list, and spins cannot be moved to other games.
Do I need FICA verification to use free spins?
You need a verified account to withdraw, and some bookmakers only credit sign-up offers after FICA checks. The promotion terms say which applies.
Why are casino free spins offers not listed here?
Online casinos hold no licence in South Africa and promoting them is unlawful. This page only covers provincially licensed bookmakers.
