Free bets in South Africa: how free bet offers work at licensed bookmakers

A free bet is a bonus stake with rules attached. Here is which licensed bookmakers publish one, and how to read the conditions before you use it.

A free bet is a bonus stake a bookmaker gives you to place on a market it chooses, usually after you register, verify your account or deposit. If the free bet wins, you normally receive the winnings without the stake, and those winnings often have to be bet through again before you can withdraw them. Of the provincially licensed bookmakers we score, three publish a free bet or bonus bet for new customers in their current promotions; they are ranked below.

Free bet offers from licensed bookmakers, compared

Each operator words its offer differently, and the detail is in the conditions rather than the headline:

  • Betshezi: Up to R10,000 in match bonuses over first four deposits, plus R50 bonus sports bet after FICA verification. The promotions page ties the bonus sports bet to FICA verification and sets its rollover at 5x at minimum odds of 1.5. The match bonuses that come with it carry 20x turnover.
  • Gbets: 50 Free Spins and a R50 Free Bet for new customers. The promotions banner pairs the free bet with spins for new customers; the public terms reviewed do not spell out the rollover for the free bet itself, so read the offer's own terms before opting in.
  • Topbet: Welcome Bonus: R30 sports/horses & R15 Casino for new sign-ups. Topbet's sign-up bonus is split between sports and horse racing on one side and casino games on the other, and its separate first-deposit match is rolled over 5x and expires three days after it is credited.

Other bookmakers publish deposit matches, cashback or free spins rather than a free bet. Those are covered on the welcome bonus page and in the main betting bonuses guide.

What "free bet" means in the small print

Three rules decide what a free bet bonus is worth in practice:

  1. Stake not returned. With most free bets, a winning bet pays only the profit. A bonus stake on odds of 2.00 that wins usually returns the winnings, not the bonus stake as well.
  2. Rollover (turnover). Winnings from a free bet are often credited as bonus funds that have to be wagered a set number of times before they become withdrawable. A 5x rollover means betting five times the amount through.
  3. Minimum odds and time limits. Most offers require each qualifying bet to be at or above minimum odds, and set a deadline. Unused bonus funds expire.

Other conditions to look for: which sports or markets the free bet can be used on, whether it can be split across several bets, whether it can be used in a multi-bet, and whether cash out is excluded.

Free bet on registration vs after a deposit

Search terms like "free bet on registration" or "register and get a free bet" describe offers credited when you open an account, before you deposit anything. In South Africa these are less common than deposit-linked offers, and even when one exists it is normally released only after FICA checks: a licensed bookmaker must verify your identity before you can withdraw.

A free bet sign-up offer and a welcome bonus are often bundled together. Betshezi's bonus bet sits alongside a deposit match; Gbets pairs its free bet with spins; Topbet runs a sign-up bonus and a separate first-deposit match. Read each part's rules on its own.

Are there free bets with no deposit in South Africa?

Sometimes. A true no-deposit free bet is credited without any money going in. Licensed SA bookmakers that offer one still require you to be 18 or older, to register with your real details and to complete verification, and they usually cap what you can withdraw from it. Offers that skip identity checks altogether, or that come from sites without a provincial licence notice, are not legal offers in South Africa. The no deposit bonus page tracks this type of offer separately.

Free bets on Aviator and other games

A sports free bet usually cannot be used on games. Game-side promotions are a separate thing: spins on named slots, or promotional bets in Spribe's Aviator chat, where the game's "Rain" feature drops bets to players in the chat. Casino-style games at bookmakers are legally disputed and depend on the province, so their promotions are treated cautiously on this site. Free spins have their own page under the bonuses section.

Promo codes and free bets

Some free bet offers need a code at registration, but none of the three offers above names a code in the promotions text quoted here. Where a code is required, the bookmaker states it in the offer's terms. Our promo codes page lists the codes that operators publish.

Who cannot claim a free bet

Bonus terms at licensed bookmakers commonly exclude people who already have an account, more than one account per household or device, and anyone who has self-excluded. If you have placed yourself on a self-exclusion list, a free bet offer does not apply to you, and no legitimate operator will try to bring you back with one.

Using free bets responsibly

A free bet is a marketing tool designed to start a betting habit. Treat it as a small extra, not a reason to open accounts at several bookmakers or to deposit more than you planned. Betting is for adults only: you must be 18 or older. If betting stops being fun, the National Responsible Gambling Programme runs a toll-free counselling line on 0800 006 008, and our responsible gambling page explains limits and self-exclusion.

Questions and answers

What is a free bet?

A free bet is a bonus stake from a bookmaker that you can place on its markets. If it wins you normally get the winnings without the stake, and those winnings may need to be rolled over before withdrawal.

Which licensed bookmakers offer a free bet on sign-up?

Among the bookmakers scored here, Betshezi, Gbets and Topbet publish a free bet, bonus bet or sign-up bonus for new customers. Offers change, so check each operator's current promotions page.

Can I withdraw a free bet straight away?

No. The bonus stake itself cannot be withdrawn, and winnings from it usually carry a rollover, minimum odds and a time limit. FICA verification is also required before any withdrawal.

Do I need a promo code for a free bet?

Only if the offer's terms say so. None of the three offers listed on this page names a code in its promotions text.

Are free bets in South Africa really free?

They cost nothing to claim, but they come with conditions that limit what you can withdraw. They are a promotion, not a way to make money.
