Is Easybet legit? How the licence checks out
In South Africa a betting site is legal only if a provincial gambling board has licensed it. Easybet's entry on the national register gives the three things you need to confirm that: the company name, the licence type (bookmaker) and the province (Western Cape). The Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board is the regulator responsible for it.
You can repeat the check in a couple of minutes:
- Open the Easybet site and read the licence notice in the footer.
- Confirm that it names the Western Cape board and that the licence number matches 10191733-004.
- Confirm the company name, Easybet Group (Pty) Ltd, and look for the 0800 006 008 helpline and the 18+ notice.
A mismatch in any of these is a reason to stop. Copycat sites sometimes borrow a well-known brand name, which is why the footer and the register matter more than the logo. Our licensed betting sites guide walks through the public registers in more detail.
Easybet South Africa versus offshore "easy bet" sites
Search for easy bet or easy bets and you will find a mix of results, including unrelated foreign brands with similar names. Only the company on the South African register holds a provincial licence. An offshore site with a similar name may look the same but is illegal to use from South Africa, has no local regulator to hear complaints and, according to the National Gambling Board, winnings from illegal interactive gambling can be confiscated. If you are unsure which site you are on, compare the company name in its footer with Easybet Group (Pty) Ltd.
Reading Easybet's bonus terms
Easybet's current welcome offer, if one is running, is described in its promotion terms. Before you accept any bonus, find these five lines in the terms:
- Qualifying deposit. The minimum amount and whether only the first deposit counts.
- Turnover. How many times the bonus, or bonus plus deposit, must be wagered.
- Minimum odds. Bets below a set price usually do not count towards turnover.
- Expiry. How many days you have to complete the turnover.
- Caps and exclusions. A maximum withdrawal from bonus winnings, and any markets or games excluded.
If any of these is missing or unclear, ask support before depositing. Our bonuses guide compares how licensed bookmakers structure their offers.
Payments: EFT, vouchers and 1Voucher
South African bookmakers typically accept a combination of bank EFT, instant EFT services such as Ozow, cards and prepaid vouchers such as 1Voucher and OTT. Each operator chooses its own list, and Easybet's accepted methods, minimum amounts and withdrawal times are set out in its banking terms. Two rules apply almost everywhere: withdrawals go to a bank account in your own name, and they are processed only after FICA is complete. Our voucher betting guide explains how 1Voucher deposits work in general.
Opening an account and FICA
Registration at a licensed bookmaker asks for your name, SA ID or passport number, date of birth, mobile number and email. Because gambling licensees are accountable institutions under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, Easybet must then verify who you are. Typical documents are a green ID book, smart ID card or passport, proof of address no older than three months and sometimes a bank statement. Upload them as soon as you register, so that your first withdrawal is not held up.
Sports, horse racing and odds
A Western Cape bookmaker licence covers fixed-odds betting on sport and, where approved, horse racing. Which sports, leagues and racing meetings Easybet covers, and whether it offers live betting or cash out, is shown in its own betting menu. When you compare prices, work out the return on a bet before you place it: our odds calculator turns odds and a stake into a potential payout, which is the easiest way to compare Easybet's price with another bookmaker's.
Slots and games: the legal question
If Easybet lists slots or crash games, note that these are disputed. The Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in October 2025 that Gauteng bookmakers may not offer bets on casino games; the National Gambling Board reads the ruling as national, while the Western Cape board says it does not affect its licensees. National policy is still pending, so what is available may change.
If something goes wrong: support and complaints
Most problems at a bookmaker come down to three things: a withdrawal held for FICA, a bonus that did not credit, or a bet settled differently from what you expected. Start with Easybet's own support channels and keep a written record: the date, the bet or transaction reference and screenshots of the slip or balance. Ask for the specific rule in the terms that the decision relies on.
If the answer does not resolve it, the licence gives you somewhere to go next. Because Easybet is licensed in the Western Cape, the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board is the regulator responsible for its conduct, and a complaint to the board should include your account details, your correspondence with the operator and the evidence you kept. This route only exists because the bookmaker is licensed; with an offshore site there is no South African body to turn to.
Tax on winnings
South Africa has no withholding tax on betting winnings: a 15% tax on large wins was proposed in 2011 but never implemented. Casual winnings are generally regarded as not taxable, while professional gamblers can be taxed. The proposed national 20% online gambling tax would be paid by operators, not by players. If your betting is substantial, check with SARS or a tax practitioner, and see our betting tax guide.
Our verdict on Easybet
Easybet passes the most important test: it is a licensed bookmaker on the national register. What this review cannot do is grade its bonus terms, payment list or app against other brands, because those details live in the operator's own terms and change often. That is reflected in its score. If you value a confirmed licence and are willing to read the terms yourself, Easybet is a legitimate option; if you want published terms to compare up front, look at the higher-scored operators in our ranking.
Betting is for adults 18 and over only. Set deposit limits from the start and see our responsible gambling page for self-exclusion and the free NRGP helpline.
